to challenges faced by young LGBT people and concerns for their mental health. From the outset, Gayline was run entirely by seven volunteers (six men and one woman) from the front room of a volunteer’s house. There was no formal structure, just a few simple rules: Volunteers must self-identify as gay Calls were never to be hung up on No intimate relationships were to occur with callers In its first year, Gayline answered 345 calls and was privately funded by its members. Monday nights were reserved for women’s calls, answered by Wendy, while Tuesday nights were designated for those under 21, with a young person fielding calls. They built links with Leicestershire Police to help trace missing young people. 1983 – Gayline hosted the first national Conference for Lesbian and Gay Phonelines, joined the Friends network, and aired the UK’s first LGBT organisation ATV public service announcement, leading to a dramatic increase in calls from 683 annually to over 10,000 within a year. 1984 – The Gay Action Group was created to lead political activism while Gayline focused on support services; Gayline also became the first LGB organisation to receive central government funding, which enabled the purchase of its first premises. 1985 – Gayline moved into 45 King Street as the first service-led lesbian and gay centre outside London, while members also helped organise Leicester’s first unofficial Pride event in Town Hall Square. 1986 – Gayline received its first Leicester City Council funding for equalities work, and the first officially recognised Leicester Pride took place with support from local political leaders. 1987 – Gayline led local HIV/AIDS initiatives, secured council funding for related support services, and produced influential research on Section 28 that was cited in House of Lords debates. 1988 – Renamed Leicester Lesbian and Gayline, the organisation secured Public Health funding to employ its first full-time staff member. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/69f361d0a950fb1caf7651f1/6952a79f-c412-432d-a00b-f369d07f25ab/Black+MENSAC.JPG Our History - 1990’s c.1990 – Leicester Lesbian and Gayline was renamed the Leicester Lesbian and Gay Centre. 1991 – The Centre opened a café on King Street and expanded its community programme with a women’s coffee bar, readings, and talks by prominent LGBT activists and academics. 1993 – The Centre strengthened its HIV/AIDS support work through partnerships with Leicestershire Aids Support Services and Black MESMAC, while offering a wide range of community activities including a lesbian parents’ group. September 1993 – The Centre pioneered a hate crime reporting service in partnership with Leicestershire Police, which influenced national programmes. 1994 – Despite Section 28, the Centre secured funding from local authorities and the Health Authority, using part of this support to provide British Sign Language training for volunteers and service users. 1996 – A National Lottery grant enabled the Centre to employ eight staff and support 20 volunteers. 1997 – The Centre relocated to 15 Wellington Street, expanded its social programme through a café, and renamed itself the Leicester Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Centre to recognise the contribution of bisexual people. 1999 – The Centre became a licensed venue and opened a dedicated women’s bar, creating a much-needed social space for lesbian and bisexual women. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/69f361d0a950fb1caf7651f1/1823e5fb-6e80-4ab6-85ee-afb6e4254da6/Screenshot+2025-02-06+175056.png Our History - 2000’s 2000 – Trade Sexual Health, originally established within the Centre, became an independent organisation dedicated to improving LGBTQ+ sexual health. 2004 – The Centre secured funding for Sexyouality Matters, the largest survey ever conducted of Leicester’s LGB communities. 2006 – The Centre published The Health and Social Care Needs of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual People in Leicester, building on the findings of the Sexyouality Matters survey to inform local policy and services. 2007 – The Centre secured Big Lottery funding to employ two full-time staff and expand work on LGBT health and social care, strengthening partnerships across the public, voluntary, and private sectors during a period of major equality reforms. 2008 – In partnership with Leicester City NHS, the Centre produced influential guidance for healthcare professionals and service providers on delivering LGBT-inclusive care and creating welcoming environments. 2010 – The organisation became a registered charity and was renamed the Leicester LGBT Centre, formally recognising and supporting the transgender community as part of its mission. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/69f361d0a950fb1caf7651f1/9fd1e006-351c-4396-acff-8601c8af7efd/LGBT-Centre-Picture1-1024x768.jpg Our History - 2010’s 2010–2015 – With Heritage Lottery Fund support, the Centre delivered the Untold Stories oral history project, recording more than 100 interviews, training 20 volunteers, attracting over 1,000 exhibition visitors, and producing a book by Bernard Greaves. 2012 – The Centre helped establish a pioneering LGBT mental health service with the Leicester Partnership Trust and De Montfort University, offering self-referral support without requiring people to disclose their identity to their GP. 2013 – The Centre contributed to Leicester’s new NHS LGBT psychological therapies service and hosted a Health and Wellbeing open day featuring Peter Tatchell and a range of NHS organisations. 2015–2019 – Funding from BBC Children in Need enabled the launch of the Young Transgender Centre of Excellence, providing nationally recognised support for young transgender people, their families, and professionals. 2017–2021 – Building on its youth work, the Centre launched the Adult Trans Project with National Lottery funding, providing support for transgender and gender-questioning adults and their families across Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland. 2018 – Pride Without Borders was established to support LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in the region. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/69f361d0a950fb1caf7651f1/0c0eb634-144f-4b33-81fb-3554b4767491/DSC_0454.JPG Our History - 2020’s 2023 –.After more than 25 years at 15 Wellington Street, the Centre moved to the Voluntary Action Leicestershire building on Newarke Street. November 2024 - The Centre was renamed the Leicestershire LGBTQ+ Centre, reaffirming its commitment to serving LGBTQ+ individuals throughout the county and Rutland. This change reflects our dedication to supporting the diverse needs of the entire LGBTQ+ community, while also continuing to learn, evolve, and grow alongside those we serve.
